چکیده

Ice has long been used by humankind for practical purposes, and more recently for artistic purposes as well. Nowadays, the field of ice construction is becoming more commerically relevant, with increased interest in ice tourism and specifically ice hotels. As a result, there is a market for automating ice construction, and building detailed structures that would otherwise require a significant amount of manual work. To address this demand, the authors are currently developing experimental robotic systems for building ice structures: the Fab@home, for building structures on the small-scale, and the Adept Cobra 600 robot, for building structures on the medium-scale. Further software and hardware development is needed for the Cobra since it was not designed for rapid prototyping, and certainly not for rapid prototyping using ice as the working material. The authors have designed and built fluid delivery systems for each machine to permit the use of water as the building material. A signal processing subsystem permits control of the water-delivery flow rate and synchronization with the robot motion. Additionally, for the Cobra, we have developed a slicing algorithm to generate toolpaths for the Cobra using stereolithography (STL) files as the input.

Development of open source software for computer-assisted intervention systems

We are developing open source software for computer assisted intervention systems. Our primary experience has been with medical robots, but the concepts (and software) apply to many physical devices that interact with the real world. The real-time performance requirements permeate all levels of our software, including common tools (such as logging, class and object registers), vectors, matrices...

Rapid Prototyping for Interactive Robots

A major problem for the development of interactive robots is the user requirement definition, especially the requirements of the appearance and the behavior of the robot. This paper proposes to tackle the problem using the well-known rapid prototyping method from the software engineering, with detailed prototyping techniques adjusted for the nature of the robots and the tactile human-robot inte...

Keizo Ushio’s Sculptures, Split Tori and Möbius Bands

Keizo Ushio is a leading international stone sculptor whose work has introduced split tori and Möbius bands to the world on a grand scale. Starting with a simple circular torus or with more elaborate twisting bands, he drills a large number of closely spaced holes to form two strands, which may or may not be connected, depending on the overall rotation of the cutting void. In the case of a toru...
